Nautical Baby Blanket Tutorial
Ebaki 4 of each colour using each of the blanket pattern pieces.
Assemble 1A to 1B and 2A to 2B.
Work 1 patch at a time. Pin and stitch Right Sides together. Clip to allow the seam to lay flat and press.
When you complete a patch, match it with its partner RS together and pin. Ensure to match seam intersections to get the “wave” flowing nicely.
Stitch and press.
Once you have sewn 2 sets of each side by side you can then go on to sew the next row.
As you complete a row you can lay it RS with the last, match seam intersections and pin, stitch and press.
Check this grid to see how and where each patch matches up.
Join the border squares to the ends of the longer border pieces.
Join the width border pieces to the top and bottom of the patchwork.
Join the border length to either side of the patchwork. Set and press.
Repeat this step for the back of the quilt, joining the border pieces to the single piece of fabric cut for the reverse side.
Join back to the front, ensuring to match intersections at corners. Leave about 25cm open to allow for inserting the wadding. Set and press the stitches.
Cut the piece of wadding approximately 1-2cm smaller than the quilt size.
Insert the wadding and pin in place, along the columns and borders.
Top stitch by hand to finish the quilt. Begin by stitching along the column, then around the pat work center, then the border.
Use a good quality embroidery thread for the top-stitching.
Cut out and pin the appliqué pieces into place.
Using blanket stitch or another appliqué stitch, secure each piece in place taking care not to go through to the other side of the blanket with your stitches.
