Josie Sway Back Top Tutorial
Cut out all pieces marking any balance marks using tailor’s tacks.
Use a ballpoint sewing machine needle on a medium size stitch.
Begin by folding over half the seam allowance of the upper and lower edges of the Back pieces. Fold over again, pin in place and stitch a row even distance from the edge to finish the seam allowances.
Repeat Step 1 for the lower edge of the Front piece.
Match the two Top Back pieces Right Sides together.
Pin and stitch the neckline and lower edge as shown.
Trim the seam allowance, turn RS out and press. Top stitch 1cm away from the lower edge to neaten.
Lay the Top Back and Front RS together.
Pin and stitch at the shoulder seams.
Finish the seam allowance using zig zag stitch or an overlocker. Press the seams toward the Back. Top stitch 1cm away from the seam line to secure.
Open up the Front and Top Back. Line up on of the Back pieces to match the joining marks of the Top Back. Pin in place and repeat with the other Back.
Fold the Sleeve Cuff in half and distribute evenly on the Sleeve. Pin and stitch in place.
Finish the seam allowance with zig zag stitch or an overlocker. Press the seam back toward the armscye and top stitch.
Lay the Sleeve RS together with the garment (ensuring to match balance marks).
Pin the shoulder seam then the underarm points before easing the rest of the sleeve head in.
Stitch and finish the seam allowance. Carefully press the seam towards the neckline using the point of the iron.
Turn the garment Wrong Sides out and match sleeve and side seams.
Pin and stitch in place. Finish the seam.
Join the Neck Cuff seam allowances to create a continuous loop. Open the seam allowance and press.
Fold the neck cuff in half and evenly distribute around the neckline. Ease the Neck Cuff on.
Pin, stitch and finish the seam allowance.
Topstitch close to the seam allowance, approx. 5mm away.
