Chain Stitch - The Tailoress PDF Sewing Patterns

Often used as a decorative stitch to outline patterns and shapes. Used in embroidery as a foundation stitch.

Mark out with tailors chalk, the design to be chain stitched. Work right to left, on the right side of the fabric and double up the thread firstly. Secure the thread at the beginning of the work and take a small stitch. Go back to the point where the thread is secured to create a stitch on the right side of the fabric. Now take the needle one stitch length from the end of the last to the end of the new one to be made. Bring the needle up and then take it down through the end point of the last stitch. This will slightly open up the last stitch giving it that ‘chain’ appearance. Repeat this process until you reach the end of your work. Ensure that you keep the stitches even.
