Buttonhole Stitch

Used to make button loops, finish button holes, make button shanks and stop fraying on raw edges. Make sure to wax and press your thread before using to make it stronger.

You can start from any direction preferable, with fabric right side up. Secure the thread. Take thread over and behind fabric, take the needle point over the thread before pulling taut to create a ‘purl’ stitch on the raw edge.
